    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Gale force winds in Shanwei. Strong winds in Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 10 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar with maximum sustained winds of about 110 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 22.1 degrees north, 113.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour move into inland Guangdong.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    Southeast up to force 11, force 6 to 7 later.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very high seas.

    Nan'ao:
    South to southeast force 5 to 6, up to force 7 at first.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the southeast quarter.

    At 10 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar was centred about 120 kilometres west of Hong Kong Observatory (near 22.1 degrees north 113.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour move into inland Guangdong.

    Pakhar has made landfall over Taishan of Guangdong.

    In the past hour, winds still occasionally reached storm force in the southwestern part of Hong Kong and occasionally reached hurricane force on high ground of Lantau Island. The Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 is expected to persist this morning.

    Rainbands associated with Pakhar are bringing occasional heavy showers and squalls to Hong Kong. There may be flooding in low-lying areas. Seas will be very rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau and Waglan Island were 102 and 92 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 120 and 111 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    2. Lock all windows and doors, fit bars into position and insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Adhesive tape fixed to large window-panes in exposed positions will reduce damage by broken glass. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish.

    3. Park your car where it is least likely to be damaged.

    4. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 270000 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar (1714) with central pressure 975 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point eight degrees north (21.8 N) one one three point four degrees east (113.4 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 15 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 280000 UTC
    Two three point eight degrees north (23.8 N)
    One zero eight point zero degrees east (108.0 E)
    Maximum winds 30 knots.

    Forecast position and intensity at 290000 UTC
    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
