Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 12:10 HKT 27/Aug/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the southeast quarter.

At noon, Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar was centred about 170 kilometres west of Hong Kong (near 22.4 degrees north 112.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

With Pakhar making landfall and departing Hong Kong, local winds are moderating. However, under the influence of Pakhar's rainbands, high winds are still affecting the southwestern part of Hong Kong. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 before 2 p.m. when local winds weaken further.

With heavy squally showers, there may be flooding in low-lying areas. Seas will still be very rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau and Chek Lap Kok were 75 and 62 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 87 and 84 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 8 Signal)

1. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

2. Although the tropical cyclone is moving away from Hong Kong, gales are expected to persist for some time. You are advised to stay indoors until winds moderate and it is safe to go out. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

3. Park your car where it is least likely to be damaged.

4. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

5. Please listen to radio or watch TV for the latest weather information broadcast. You can also browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for the information.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 280300 UTC
Two three point eight degrees north (23.8 N)
One zero seven point four degrees east (107.4 E)
Maximum winds 25 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 290300 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
