    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar has weakened into a tropical storm. At 1 p.m., Pakhar with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 22.5 degrees north, 112.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

    Southeast up to force 8, force 6 to 7 later.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very rough to high seas.

    Nan'ao:

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 270300 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar (1714) with central pressure 984 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point two degrees north (22.2 N) one one two point seven degrees east (112.7 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 280300 UTC
    Two three point eight degrees north (23.8 N)
    One zero seven point four degrees east (107.4 E)
    Maximum winds 25 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
