Cloudy with squally showers and a few thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy and seas will be rough with swells at first. Temperatures will range between 25 and 28 degrees. Moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Weather improving with sunny periods and a few showers in the following couple of days.

    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Pakhar with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 23.3 degrees north, 110.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour further inland and weaken.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea.     Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Pakhar was estimated to be about 410 kilometres west-northwest of Hong Kong (near 23.3 degrees north 110.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour further inland and weaken.

    Occasional strong winds are still affecting offshore areas of Hong Kong. Depending on the changes in local winds, the Observatory will consider cancelling all Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 270900 UTC, Tropical Storm Pakhar (1714) with central pressure 994 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two three point one degrees north (23.1 N) one one zero point nine degrees east (110.9 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 15 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
