Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Showers associated with Tropical Depression Pakhar are affecting the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea.

At 10 p.m., Pakhar was centred about 480 kilometres west-northwest of Hong Kong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour further inland and dissipate gradually.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Cloudy with squally showers and a few thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy and seas will be rough with swells at first. Temperatures will range between 25 and 28 degrees. Moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Weather improving with sunny periods and a few showers in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    Tropical Storm Pakhar has weakened into a tropical depression. At 9 p.m., Pakhar with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 23.4 degrees north, 109.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour further inland and dissipate gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    All signals were cancelled at 10:10 p.m.

    At 10 p.m., Tropical Depression Pakhar was centred about 480 kilometres west-northwest of Hong Kong (near 23.5 degrees north 109.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour further inland and dissipate gradually.

    With Pakhar moving away from Hong Kong, local winds have further moderated. As there are still swells at first, members of the public should remain on the alert.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Pakhar (1714) has weakened into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 998 hectopascals. At 271200 UTC, it was centred within 90 nautical miles of two three point three degrees north (23.3 N) one one zero point one degrees east (110.1 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 15 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
