Bulletin updated at 00:45 HKT 28/Aug/2017

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar skirted past the southwest of Hong Kong at about 100 kilometres yesterday morning. Under the influence of Pakhar's circulation, winds once reached storm force in the southern part of Hong Kong. Pakhar also brought heavy squally showers and thunderstorms to the territory. More than 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over the territory, and rainfall even exceeded 150 millimetres over the urban areas and New Territories East yesterday. Pakhar made landfall over Taishan of Guangdong, moved inland and weakened into an area of low pressure gradually. An active southerly airstream is expected to bring squally showers to the coast of Guangdong today.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong

Cloudy with squally showers and a few thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy and there will be swells at first. Temperatures will range between 25 and 28 degrees. Moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Weather improving with sunny periods and a few showers in the following couple of days.

(The above forecast period is valid up to 23:59 HKT today, 28/08/2017; Regular update at : around 45 minutes past each hour, 16:15 HKT and 23:15 HKT)

Bulletin issued at 00:30 HKT 28/Aug/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning

Tropical Depression Pakhar (1714) has weakened into an area of low pressure with central pressure 1002 hectopascals. At 271500 UTC, it was centred within 90 nautical miles of two three point six degrees north (23.6 N) one zero nine point four degrees east (109.4 E).

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 20 knots.

No further warnings on this area of low pressure will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
