At 10 a.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 25 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 93 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 0.2. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Under the influence of an active southerly airstream, areas of thundery showers continue to develop in the vicinity of Hong Kong. Showers will be rather heavy over parts of the territory. Members of the public should be on the alert.

Though rainstorm warning has been cancelled, people should stay alert to the danger that may be brought about by river flooding.

Gusts reaching 70 kilometres per hour or above may affect Hong Kong.

The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 1:00 p.m. today. A few squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

An active southerly airstream is bringing squally showers to the coast of Guangdong. Locally, more than 40 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places during the past few hours, and rainfall even exceeded 60 millimetres over Kowloon, Tai Po and the western part of Hong Kong Island.

Weather forecast for today

Cloudy with squally showers and a few thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at first. Moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Weather improving with sunny periods and a few showers in the next couple of days.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Depression Pakhar (1714) has weakened into an area of low pressure with central pressure 1002 hectopascals. At 271500 UTC, it was centred within 90 nautical miles of two three point six degrees north (23.6 N) one zero nine point four degrees east (109.4 E).

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 20 knots.

    No further warnings on this area of low pressure will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
