Weather Information for South China Coastal Waters

Bulletin issued at 19:31 HKT 31/Aug/2017

At 7 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 28 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 74 per cent.

The tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea will linger around the sea areas to the west of Luzon and will be slow moving. It will keep a distance from Hong Kong tonight and at first tomorrow (Friday). The tropical cyclone is expected to intensify and move gradually in the general direction of eastern Guangdong to the Pearl River Estuary in the following couple of days. When the tropical cyclone takes on a more definite northerly track and edges closer to the coast of Guangdong, the Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal No. 1 during the day tomorrow (Friday). The weather on Saturday and Sunday is expected to deteriorate progressively with heavy squally showers over the coast of Guangdong. Winds will also strengthen gradually. Members of the public should be aware of possible changes in weather in planning activities on Saturday and Sunday.

Please be reminded that:

The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 8:30 p.m. today. Squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
