Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Showers are affecting the coast of Guangdong. Thundery showers triggered by high temperatures brought more than 10 millimetres of rainfall to many places over the territory in the past couple of hours, and rainfall even exceed 30 millimetres over New Territories West and Lantau Island.

At 8 p.m., tropical depression over northeastern part of the South China Sea was centred about 260 kilometres east-southeast of Dongsha. It is forecast to be slow moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy with a few showers and squally thunderstorms. Very hot and hazy with sunny periods tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 27 and 33 degrees. Light to moderate northeasterly winds.

Outlook : Weather will deteriorate progressively in the following couple of days. There will be heavy squally showers and winds will strengthen gradually.

Weather Situation:
At 7 p.m., the tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 19.5 degrees north, 118.9 degrees east. It is forecast to be slow moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
Northeast force 4 to 5.
Isolated heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Some haze tomorrow.
Moderate seas.

Nan'ao:
North to northeast force 6 to 7, becoming force 8 later.

At 311200 UTC, the tropical depression over the northeastern part of South China Sea with central pressure 1000 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one nine point five degrees north (19.5 N) one one eight point nine degrees east (118.9 E) and is forecast to be slow moving for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
