Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The subtropical ridge covering southeastern China weakened gradually today. Locally, it was hazy with sunny periods. Temperatures generally rose to above 32 degrees. Thundery showers triggered by high temperatures brought more than 10 millimetres of rainfall to many places over the territory in the evening, and rainfall even exceeded 30 millimetres over New Territories West and Lantau Island. The subtropical ridge will continue to weaken.

Besides, the area of low pressure over the northeastern part of the South China Sea intensified into a tropical depression today. At 11 p.m., the tropical depression was centred about 260 kilometres east-southeast of Dongsha. It is forecast to be slow moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Friday, 1 Sep 2017)

Mainly cloudy with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms. Very hot and hazy with sunny periods during the day. Temperatures will range between 27 and 33 degrees. Light to moderate northeasterly winds.

Outlook : Weather will deteriorate progressively in the following couple of days. There will be heavy squally showers and winds will strengthen gradually.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., the tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 19.5 degrees north, 118.9 degrees east. It is forecast to be slow moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    Northeast force 4 to 5.
    Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms. Some haze.
    Moderate seas.

    Nan'ao:
    North to northeast force 6 to 7, becoming force 8.
    Scattered heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    Shanwei and South of Hong Kong:
    North to northeast force 6 to 7.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 311200 UTC, the tropical depression over the northeastern part of South China Sea with central pressure 1000 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one nine point five degrees north (19.5 N) one one eight point nine degrees east (118.9 E) and is forecast to be slow moving for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
