Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The subtropical ridge affecting southeastern China is weakening gradually. Showers are affecting the coast of Guangdong.

The tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea was named as Mawar. At 4 a.m., Mawar was centred about 240 kilometres east-southeast of Dongsha. It is forecast to be slow moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly cloudy with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms. Very hot and hazy with sunny periods during the day. Temperatures will range between 27 and 33 degrees. Light to moderate northeasterly winds.

Outlook : Weather will deteriorate progressively in the following couple of days. There will be heavy squally showers and winds will strengthen gradually.

    Weather Situation:
    The tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea was named as Mawar. At 3 a.m., Mawar with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 19.5 degrees north, 118.8 degrees east. It is forecast to be slow moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    The tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea (1716) was named as Mawar. At 311800 UTC, Mawar with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one nine point five degrees north (19.5 N) one one eight point seven degrees east (118.7 E) and is forecast to be slow moving for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
