At 10 a.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 28 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 84 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 1. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

The latest forecast indicates that Mawar may take a more northerly track towards the eastern coast of Guangdong and remain slow-moving initially, keeping a distance from Hong Kong. When it becomes clear that Mawar starts to edge towards the coast of Guangdong, the Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal No. 1 later today (Friday). Mawar is expected to intensify progressively and make landfall over the coast of eastern Guangdong on Sunday. The weather in Hong Kong is expected to deteriorate progressively later on Saturday and on Sunday with squally showers. Winds will also strengthen gradually. Members of the public should be aware of possible changes in weather in planning outdoor activities on Saturday and Sunday.

Hot weather might cause adverse health effects. The Observatory advises the public to stay on the alert.

A continental airstream is affecting Guangdong.

At 10 a.m., Tropical Depression Mawar was centred about 220 kilometres east-southeast of Dongsha. It is forecast to be slow moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for today

Hot and hazy with sunny periods. There will also be a few showers. Isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and tonight. Light to moderate northerly winds.

Outlook : Weather will deteriorate progressively in the next couple of days. There will be heavy squally showers and winds will strengthen gradually.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 9 a.m., Tropical Depression Mawar with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 19.6 degrees north, 118.5 degrees east. It is forecast to be slow moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    North force 4 to 5.
    Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms. Some haze.
    Moderate seas.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    North to northeast force 7, occasionally force 8, becoming cyclonic up to force 9 later.
    Scattered heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough to very rough seas, becoming high later.

    South of Hong Kong:
    North to northeast force 6 to 7.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 010000 UTC, Tropical Depression Mawar (1716) with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one nine point six degrees north (19.6 N) one one eight point five degrees east (118.5 E) and is forecast to be slow moving for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
