At 6 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 27 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 91 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 0.2. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Mawar moved generally northward today, adopting a track farther away from Hong Kong. Mawar is expected to intensify progressively and make landfall over the coast of eastern Guangdong on Sunday. Since Mawar's track is farther away, its threat to Hong Kong is relatively low in the short term. Depending on Mawar's intensity change and movement, the Observatory will consider whether or not to issue the Standby Signal No. 1 tomorrow (Saturday). Members of the public should take note of the latest weather situation in planning outdoor activities on Saturday and Sunday.

Gusts reaching 70 kilometres per hour or above may affect Hong Kong.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A continental airstream is affecting Guangdong. Meanwhile, thundery showers triggered by the high temperatures are affecting the region.

At 4 p.m., Tropical Depression Mawar was centred about 190 kilometres east of Dongsha. It is forecast to be slow-moving and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy with a few showers. Showers will be heavier at times with squally thunderstorms tonight and later tomorrow. The minimum temperature will be about 26 degrees. Hazy with sunny intervals tomorrow. The maximum temperature will be around 32 degrees. Moderate northerly winds, occasionally fresh offshore later.

Outlook : Windier with occasional squally showers in the following couple of days.

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 4 p.m., Tropical Depression Mawar with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 20.4 degrees north, 118.5 degrees east. It is forecast to be moving slowly and lingering over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    North force 4 to 5, up to force 6 later.
    Scattered heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Some haze later.
    Moderate seas, becoming rough seas later.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    North to northeast force 7 to 8, becoming cyclonic up to force 10 later.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 010900 UTC, Tropical Depression Mawar (1716) with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point six degrees north (20.6 N) one one eight point five degrees east (118.5 E) and is forecast to be slow moving for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.

    One one seven point seven degrees east (117.7 E)
    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
