Thundery showers triggered by high temperatures brought more than 30 millimetres of rainfall to Sai Kung, Tuen Mun and Lantau Island in the evening. Besides, the tropical depression over the northeastern part of the South China Sea was named Mawar yesterday morning, and intensified into a tropical storm yesterday night. Mawar is expected to move in the general direction of eastern Guangdong today and tomorrow. Weather over the region will become unsettled with heavy squally showers.

At 11 p.m. last night, Mawar was centred about 180 kilometres east-northeast of Dongsha. It is forecast to move north-northwest slowly in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong

Mainly cloudy with a few showers. The minimum temperature will be about 26 degrees. Hazy with sunny intervals during the day. The maximum temperature will be around 32 degrees. Showers will be heavier at times with squally thunderstorms later. Moderate northerly winds, occasionally fresh offshore later.

One one six point zero degrees east (116.0 E)
Maximum winds 55 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 041500 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
