    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Mawar with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.3 degrees north, 117.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or north-northwest slowly in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    North force 4 to 5, force 6 to 7 later.
    Isolated heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Some haze.
    Moderate seas, becoming rough later.

    Nan'ao:
    Cyclonic force 8 to 9, becoming cyclonic up to force 10.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very rough to high seas.

    Shanwei:
    North to northeast force 8 to 9, becoming force 9 to 10 later.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 7 a.m., Tropical Storm Mawar was estimated to be about 350 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.3 degrees north 117.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest slowly in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong.

    In the past few hours, Mawar edged slightly closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong and its outer rainband started to affect that area.

    According to the present forecast track, Mawar will make landfall over the coast east of Shanwei later on Sunday. As Mawar is relatively slow-moving, local winds are not expected to strengthen significantly during the day today. The chance of issuing the Strong Winds Signal No 3 during the day is relatively low.

    Locally, there will be occasional squally showers today and on Sunday. Members of the public should take note of the latest weather situation in planning outdoor activities.

    1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    2. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 012100 UTC, Tropical Storm Mawar (1716) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point two degrees north (21.2 N) one one seven point five degrees east (117.5 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    Two two point two degrees north (22.2 N)
    One one seven point zero degrees east (117.0 E)
    Maximum winds 55 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (01 Sep 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
