During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 0.8. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 4 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Mawar with maximum sustained winds of about 90 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 21.5 degrees north, 117.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move north-northwest slowly in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong and strengthen gradually.

    Northwest force 5 to 6, becoming southwest up to force 7 later.
    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 5 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Mawar was estimated to be about 310 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.5 degrees north 117.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest slowly in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong and strengthen gradually.

    Mawar is rather slow-moving. According to the present forecast track, Mawar will keep a distance from Hong Kong tonight and Sunday morning. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 on Sunday morning is low.

    Mawar is expected to make landfall on Sunday night over the coast of eastern Guangdong more than about 200 kilometres to the east of Hong Kong.

    Rainbands associated with Mawar will affect Hong Kong progressively. Members of the public should take note of the latest weather situation in planning outdoor activities.

    1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    2. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Mawar (1716) has intensified into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 984 hectopascals. At 020600 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point three degrees north (21.3 N) one one seven point one degrees east (117.1 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    Two two point seven degrees north (22.7 N)
    One one six point six degrees east (116.6 E)
    Maximum winds 60 knots.

    Two four point zero degrees north (24.0 N)

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (01 Sep 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
