Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 18:45 HKT 03/Sep/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Mawar was estimated to be about 210 kilometres east of Hong Kong (near 22.5 degrees north 116.2 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong.

Mawar adopted a more northwesterly track in the past few hours. According to the latest forecast track, Mawar will make landfall in the vicinity of Shanwei around midnight and weaken, but will still move closer to Hong Kong thereafter. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 tonight.

With Mawar moving close and landing over eastern Guangdong, its rainbands will affect the Pearl River Delta. There will be heavy rain and squalls in Hong Kong in the early part of tomorrow (Monday). Members of the public should take note of the latest weather situation before departing home tomorrow morning.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

2. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

Severe Tropical Storm Mawar (1716) has weakened into a Tropical Storm with central pressure 988 hectopascals. At 030900 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point four degrees north (22.4 N) one one six point three degrees east (116.3 E) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 040900 UTC
Two three point five degrees north (23.5 N)
One one four point one degrees east (114.1 E)
Maximum winds 25 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 050900 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
