Announcement on Localised Heavy Rain: More than 70 millimetres of rainfall were recorded in Lantau Island in Islands District in the past 1 hour ending at 7:25 p.m. and may cause serious flooding.

The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 11:45 p.m. today. Squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Mawar with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 22.5 degrees north, 116.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong.

    West to southwest force 5 to 6.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    Southwest force 6 to 7, up to force 8 at first.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 9 p.m., Tropical Storm Mawar was estimated to be about 200 kilometres east of Hong Kong (near 22.6 degrees north 116.1 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong.

    According to the present forecast track, Mawar will make landfall in the vicinity of Shanwei around midnight and weaken. Thereafter, Mawar will still move closer to Hong Kong and local winds will turn to strong southwesterlies. The Observatory will issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 in the next few hours.

    The rainbands of Mawar will bring heavy rain and squalls to Hong Kong tomorrow morning. Members of the public should take note of the latest weather situation before departing home tomorrow morning.

    1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    2. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 031200 UTC, Tropical Storm Mawar (1716) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point six degrees north (22.6 N) one one six point one degrees east (116.1 E) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
