Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Severe Tropical Storm Mawar weakened into a tropical storm today. Mawar edged closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong gradually, and made landfall near Shanwei at night. Under the influence of its outer rainbands, there were squally showers and thunderstorms in Hong Kong. More than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places, and rainfall even exceeded 70 millimetres over Lantau Island. Mawar will move into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually tomorrow. The associated rainbands will continue to affect Guangdong.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Monday, 4 Sep 2017)

Strong southwesterly winds, moderating later. Cloudy. There will be heavy rain with squalls and thunderstorms. Rain will ease off later. Temperatures will range between 25 and 30 degrees. Seas will be rough with swells at first.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Mawar with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 22.9 degrees north, 116.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Mawar was estimated to be about 200 kilometres east-northeast of Hong Kong (near 22.9 degrees north 116.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong.

    Mawar has made landfall near Shanwei. It will move inland and weaken gradually, but will still move closer to Hong Kong. Winds will turn to strong southwesterlies over parts of the territory. The Strong Wind Signal No. 3 will be in effect for a period of time tomorrow morning (Monday).

    Mawar is expected to skirt more than about 100 kilometres to the northeast of Hong Kong. Unless Mawar moves even closer to the territory, the chance to issue the No.8 Gale or Storm Signal will not be high.

    The rainbands of Mawar will bring heavy rain and squalls to Hong Kong tomorrow morning. Members of the public should take note of the latest weather situation before departing home tomorrow morning.

    1. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish, this applies particularly to dwellers in low-lying areas.

    2. Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 031200 UTC, Tropical Storm Mawar (1716) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point six degrees north (22.6 N) one one six point one degrees east (116.1 E) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
