Under the influence of its outer rainbands, there were squally showers and thunderstorms in Hong Kong. More than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places, and rainfall even exceeded 70 millimetres over Lantau Island. Mawar will move into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually tomorrow. The associated rainbands will continue to affect Guangdong.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 031500 UTC, Tropical Storm Mawar (1716) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point nine degrees north (22.9 N) one one five point nine degrees east (115.9 E) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 041500 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
