    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Mawar with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 23.1 degrees north, 115.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 6 a.m., Tropical Storm Mawar was estimated to be about 120 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong (near 23.1 degrees north 114.9 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour further into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

    Strong winds are affecting parts of the territory. The Strong Wind Signal No. 3 will be in effect for a period of time this morning.

    In the coming few hours, Mawar will be closest to the territory, skirting more than about 100 kilometres to the northeast of Hong Kong. It will weaken further over inland.

    The rainbands of Mawar are affecting Hong Kong. There will be squally showers, heavy at times, in the morning. Members of the public should take note of the latest weather situation before departing home in the morning.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Sha Chau and Cheung Chau were 59, 47 and 42 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish, this applies particularly to dwellers in low-lying areas.

    2. Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 032100 UTC, Tropical Storm Mawar (1716) with central pressure 994 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two three point one degrees north (23.1 N) one one five point zero degrees east (115.0 E) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (03 Sep 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
