Significant Weather Information (SIGMET)

The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea. Weather forecasters at the Airport Meteorological Office issues SIGMET information when hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere such as thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, turbulence, icing occur or are expected to occur in the airspace.

Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 11:45 HKT 04/Sep/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

At noon, Tropical Depression Mawar was estimated to be about 130 kilometres north of Hong Kong (near 23.5 degrees north 114.1 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour further into inland Guangdong and dissipate gradually.

With Mawar continuing to weaken and starting to depart from Hong Kong, local winds will weaken gradually, but winds will still be occasionally strong offshore at first. There will be swells over the seas. Members of the public are advised to stay from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

When local winds weaken further, the Observatory will cancel all tropical cyclone warning signals.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 040300 UTC, Tropical Depression Mawar (1716) with central pressure 1002 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two three point five degrees north (23.5 N) one one four point two degrees east (114.2 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 050300 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
