During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 7. The intensity of UV radiation was high.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Showers are affecting the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea.

The area of low pressure over the Luzon Strait has intensified into a tropical depression and was named Guchol. At 10 a.m., Guchol was centred about 260 kilometres south of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of the Taiwan Strait and weaken gradually later.

Weather forecast for today

Sunny periods and a few showers. Hot during the day. Light to moderate southwesterly winds.

Outlook : Sunny intervals and a few showers in the next couple of days. Fine early next week.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 10:15 a.m. on 06 September 2017

    Weather Situation:
    A southwesterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    The area of low pressure over the Luzon Strait has intensified into a tropical depression and was named Guchol. At 10 a.m., Guchol with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.3 degrees north, 120.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of the Taiwan Strait and weaken gradually later.

II.  SYNOPSIS OF THE WEATHER SITUATION :
     SHOWERS ARE AFFECTING THE COAST OF GUANGDONG AND
     THE NORTHERN PART OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA.
     MEANWHILE, THE AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OVER THE
     LUZON STRAIT HAS INTENSIFIED INTO A TROPICAL
     DEPRESSION AND WAS NAMED GUCHOL. AT 10 A.M.,

     120.3 DEGREES EAST. IT IS FORECAST TO MOVE

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    An area of low pressure over Luzon Strait has intensified into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 1000 hectopascals and was named as Guchol (1717). At 060000 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point two degrees north (20.2 N) one two zero point four degrees east (120.4 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over sea.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
