At 5 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 31 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 75 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 1. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Tropical Cyclone Guchol will move in the general direction of Taiwan Strait and the coast of Fujian. It is expected to keep some distance from Hong Kong and its threat to the territory is not high.

Hot weather might cause adverse health effects. The Observatory advises the public to stay on the alert.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Showers are affecting the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea.

At 4 p.m., Tropical Depression Guchol was centred about 180 kilometres south of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the Taiwan Strait and the coast of Fujian and will weaken gradually later.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy with a few showers. There will be isolated thunderstorms tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 27 and 31 degrees. Light to moderate southwesterly winds.

Outlook : Still a few showers on Friday. Mainly fine during the weekend and early next week.

    Strong winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei.

    Weather Situation:
    At 4 p.m., Tropical Depression Guchol with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 21.0 degrees north, 120.1 degrees east. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour in the general direction of Taiwan Strait and the coast of Fujian and will weaken gradually later.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 060600 UTC, Tropical Depression Guchol (1717) with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of two zero point seven degrees north (20.7 N) one two zero point zero degrees east (120.0 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over sea.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
