Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A dry northeast monsoon continued to affect southern China yesterday. Locally, it was fine and dry. A replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to reach the south China coast today.

Besides, the tropical depression west of the Philippines intensified progressively into a severe tropical storm yesterday was named Damrey. At 11 p.m. last night, Damrey was centred about 280 kilometres north of Nansha Dao. It is forecast to move west at about 18 kilometres per hour across the southern part of the South China Sea. The tropical depression over the seas south of Vietnam weakened into an area of low pressure yesterday morning.

It will be fine at first. Becoming cloudy with a few rain patches. Temperatures will range between 21 and 25 degrees. Moderate to fresh north to northeasterly winds.

Outlook : Windier and slightly cooler during the weekend.

Weather Situation:
A replenishment of the northeast monsoon will reach the south China coastal waters today.

At 11 p.m., Damrey with maximum sustained winds of about 90 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 12.9 degrees north, 114.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move west at about 18 kilometres per hour across the southern part of the South China Sea.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 021500 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Damrey (1723) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one two point eight degrees north (12.8 N) one one four point nine degrees east (114.9 E) and is forecast to move west at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

One two point zero degrees north (12.0 N)
One one one point one degrees east (111.1 E)
Maximum winds 65 knots.

They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
