Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A dry northeast monsoon is bringing fine weather to southern China. Meanwhile, a cloud band is covering the northeastern part of the South China Sea. Locally, the relative humidity over parts of the territory fell below 40 per cent around noon.

Severe Tropical Storm Damrey has intensified into a typhoon. At noon, Damrey was centred about 720 kilometres east-northeast of Ho Chi Minh City. It is forecast to move west at about 18 kilometres per hour towards the southern part of Vietnam.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Mainly fine. Very dry in the afternoon. Moderate to fresh north to northeasterly winds.

Outlook : Windier and slightly cooler in the next couple of days. Cloudier midweek next week.

It is forecast to move west at about 18 kilometres per hour towards the southern part of Vietnam.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 030600 UTC, Typhoon Damrey (1723) with central pressure 975 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one two point seven degrees north (12.7 N) one one two point six degrees east (112.6 E) and is forecast to move west at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 65 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
