An intense winter monsoon is affecting Guangdong.

At noon, Tropical Depression Kai-tak was centred about 360 kilometres southeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west-southwest at about 14 kilometres per hour across the Philippines.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Cold and dry. Mainly cloudy. Sunny periods in the afternoon. Moderate to fresh northerly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground at first.

Outlook : Fine and dry in the next couple of days. It will be cold in the morning with minimum temperatures remaining at 12 degrees or below.

    At noon, Tropical Depression Kai-tak with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 12.0 degrees north, 123.1 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-southwest at about 14 kilometres per hour across the Philippines.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 170300 UTC, Tropical Depression Kai-tak (1726) with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one two point zero degrees north (12.0 N) one two three point four degrees east (123.4 E) and is forecast to move west-southwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (16 Dec 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
