At 10 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 18 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 91 per cent.

A broad band of clouds will bring occasional rain to the territory on Saturday (6 January) and the following few days. A cold front will reach the south China coast on Monday. Under the influence of the intense winter monsoon behind the cold front, the temperature in Hong Kong will fall significantly during the day on Monday and will become cold at night. Temperatures in urban areas will drop below 10 degrees on Tuesday and it will be a few degrees lower in the New Territories. It will also be windy with rain. The cold weather is expected to persist for several days. Weather will improve on Wednesday.

A broad band of clouds is covering the coast of Guangdong. Meanwhile, a rainband is affecting the northern part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Cloudy. Visibility relatively low in some areas. There will be a few rain patches, with more rain later tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 16 and 19 degrees. Fresh easterly winds, occasionally strong offshore.

Outlook : Rainy on Sunday. Temperatures dropping appreciably on Monday and becoming cold at night. The cold weather will persist until the latter part of next week.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 040600 UTC, Tropical Depression Bolaven (1801) has weakened into an area of low pressure.

No further warnings on this area of low pressure will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless regeneration takes place.




The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
