Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Winds were light over the coast of Guangdong at first today. Locally, it was hot with sunny periods. Convective activities triggered by high temperatures brought heavy showers and thunderstorms to the territory in the evening. More than 40 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places, and rainfall even exceeded 80 millimetres over the northern part of the New Territories. More than 5000 cloud-to-ground lightning strokes were recorded in Hong Kong. Besides, the area of low pressure over the northeastern part of the South China Sea brought unsettled weather to the region today. The area of low pressure is expected to move northeast towards the vicinity of Taiwan. The associated unsettled weather will affect the northern part of the South China Sea and the coast of Guangdong in the next few days.

Severe Typhoon Soulik weakened from a severe typhoon into a typhoon today. At 11 p.m., Soulik was centred about 130 kilometres south-southwest of Jeju. It is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of the Korean Peninsula. Meanwhile, Severe Typhoon Cimaron was centred about 740 kilometres southeast of Kagoshima. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 32 kilometres per hour in the general direction of Japan.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Thursday, 23 Aug 2018)

Mainly cloudy with occasional showers and a few thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at first. Sunny intervals during the day. Temperatures will range between 26 and 31 degrees. Light winds.
