Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 16:45 HKT 11/Sep/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 5 p.m., Tropical Storm Barijat was estimated to be about 410 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.8 degrees north 117.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 14 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the coast of western Guangdong.

The circulation of Barijat is relatively small. It will still maintain some distance from Hong Kong tonight. Barijat is expected to edge slightly closer to the Pearl River Estuary tomorrow and its associated squally showers will affect Hong Kong gradually. The Observatory will take into account the variation of local wind strength to consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 tomorrow. The public is advised to take note of the latest weather information before leaving home tomorrow morning.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Precautions should be taken. Windows and doors should be checked.

2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

4. There may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline.

5. Construction and property management practitioners should make sure that overhanging facilities and temporary structures outdoors are securely fastened, and should take precautionary measures.

6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
