Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 04:45 HKT 12/Sep/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Barijat was estimated to be about 270 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.6 degrees north 116.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 18 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the coast of western Guangdong.

Local winds are currently from the north and rather weak. According to the present forecast track, Barijat is expected to skirt around 100 to 200 kilometres south of Hong Kong later this afternoon. As Barijat edges closer to the Pearl River Delta, local winds will turn to easterlies and strengthen gradually during the day with occasional squally showers. The Observatory will take into account the variation of local wind strength in considering the issuance of the Strong Wind Signal, No.3 after 10 a.m.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Precautions should be taken. Windows and doors should be checked.

2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

4. There may be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
