Weather Information for South China Coastal Waters

Bulletin issued at 15:02 HKT 12/Sep/2018

At 3 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 28 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 74 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 1. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Super Typhoon Mangkhut now over the western North Pacific will enter the South China Sea this Saturday and move quickly towards the coast of Guangdong. As Mangkhut has a large circulation with intense winds, it will pose considerable threat to the coast of Guangdong. Although there are still uncertainties in its track, Mangkhut is expected to bring adverse weather to Hong Kong on Sunday with frequent squalls and heavy rain according to the present forecast track. Seas will be very rough with swells. Together with the storm surge, low-lying areas may have flooding or backflow of seawater. The Observatory advises members of the public to be fully prepared and to complete all precautionary measures in the next few days. If you have activities later on Saturday and on Sunday, please note that the severe weather may affect your plan. Make appropriate contingency arrangements as soon as possible. Please continue to stay tuned to the latest information on Mangkhut issued by the Observatory.

Please be reminded that:

The Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 3 has been issued.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
