Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 22:45 HKT 12/Sep/2018

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Barijat was estimated to be about 210 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 20.8 degrees north 113.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move west at about 20 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of Leizhou Peninsula.

Barijat tracked westwards steadily in the past few hours and continued to move gradually away from Hong Kong. However, the strong winds associated with Barijat will continue to affect the Pearl River Estuary during the overnight period. Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 will still be in effect for some time. Local winds will gradually weaken on Thursday. The public is advised to take note of the latest weather information before leaving home in the morning.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island and Cheung Chau Beach were 53 and 46 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 59 and 53 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. Please take precautions now. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors.

2. Seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

3. Small vessels not yet in typhoon shelters should seek shelter without delay. Use heavy anchors and check that all deck fittings are firmly fastened.

4. Avoid staying in areas exposed to high winds. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
