Weather Information for South China Coastal Waters

Bulletin issued at 16:02 HKT 13/Sep/2018

At 4 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 29 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 74 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 4. The intensity of UV radiation was moderate.

According to the present forecast track, Super Typhoon Mangkhut will move towards the vicinity of Luzon on Friday and Saturday. Its track and wind strength near the centre may change under the influence of the terrain of Luzon, but it is expected to remain in the category of super typhoon after entering the South China Sea. Although there are still uncertainties in the subsequent track of Mangkhut and its distance from Hong Kong, Mangkhut’s extensive circulation will bring significantly deteriorating weather to Hong Kong on Sunday with frequent heavy squally showers. Seas will be very rough with swells and low-lying areas may be affected by storm surge. Please take suitable precautions and pay close attention to the latest information on Mangkhut issued by the Observatory.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

The tropical storm Barijat (1823) has weakened into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 1000 hectopascals. At 130600 UTC, it was centred within 90 nautical miles of two one point seven degrees north (21.7 N) one zero nine point five degrees east (109.5 E) and is forecast to move west at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 140600 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
