Outlook : Weather will be adverse with storm surge tomorrow. Seas will be high. Winds will moderate gradually later on Monday but there will still be heavy squally showers.

    Weather Situation:
    At noon, Super Typhoon Mangkhut with maximum sustained winds of about 195 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 18.3 degrees north, 120.1 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and edge closer to the coast of Guangdong gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At noon, Super Typhoon Mangkhut was estimated to be about 760 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.3 degrees north 120.1 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and edge closer to the coast of Guangdong gradually.

    Mangkhut is moving rapidly towards the coast of western Guangdong, posing a severe threat to the region. Locally, winds offshore and on high ground are strengthening gradually. The outer rainbands of Mangkhut are also edging closer to the coast of Guangdong. The Observatory will issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. today.

    Mangkhut has extensive circulation with high winds. As Mangkhut edges progressively closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary, the weather over the region will deteriorate rapidly around midnight. There will be heavy rain with squalls. The Observatory will consider issuing the No.8 Gale or Storm Signal in the small hours tomorrow.

    There are significant swells today. The Observatory makes a special appeal to the members of the public to stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.

    1. Please complete all precautions as soon as possible. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

    2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

    3. Those who have duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call.

    4. People planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, outlying islands or remote parts of Hong Kong should note that changes in weather may affect your trips.

    5. Construction and property management practitioners should make sure that overhanging facilities and temporary structures outdoors are securely fastened or placed on the ground, and complete precautionary measures as soon as possible.

    6. Small vessel owners should now complete all safety arrangements and return to nearby typhoon shelters.

    7. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 150300 UTC, the super typhoon Mangkhut (1822) with central pressure 940 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one eight point three degrees north (18.3 N) one two zero point one degrees east (120.1 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 16 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 105 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 210 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 330 nautical miles.

    Two zero point eight degrees north (20.8 N)
    One one four point two degrees east (114.2 E)
    Maximum winds 115 knots.

    Two two point three degrees north (22.3 N)

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
