Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Strong northeasterly winds. Winds will strengthen significantly tomorrow and becoming storm force southeasterly winds, hurricane offshore and on high ground. Cloudy to overcast. There will be frequent heavy rain, squalls, thunderstorms and storm surge tomorrow. Seas will be high with swells. Temperatures will range between 25 and 30 degrees tomorrow.

Outlook : Still heavy squally showers on Monday. Winds will weaken gradually later. Showers easing off in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., Super Typhoon Mangkhut with maximum sustained winds of about 195 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 19.2 degrees north, 118.7 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea towards the coast of western Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 7 p.m., Super Typhoon Mangkhut was estimated to be about 580 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.2 degrees north 118.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea towards the coast of western Guangdong.

    Mangkhut continues to move rapidly towards the coast of western Guangdong, posing a severe threat to the region.

    Mangkhut has extensive circulation with fierce winds. As Mangkhut edges progressively closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary, the weather over the region will deteriorate rapidly around midnight. The Observatory will issue the No.8 Gale or Storm Signal between 11 p.m. tonight to 2 a.m. tomorrow.

    There are significant swells today. The Observatory makes a special appeal to the members of the public to stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.

    Adverse weather will prevail tomorrow with winds strengthening rapidly and frequent heavy rain and squalls. Sea will be high. Under the influence of storm surge, a high water level of around 3.5 metres above chart datum is expected at Quarry Bay between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m tomorrow, or about 2 metres above the normal tide heights. The high water level may cause severe flooding in low-lying areas.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn were 52 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 65 kilometres per hour.

    (Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

    1. Please take precautions now. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

    2. Drains should now be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

    3. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    4. Construction and property management practitioners should make sure that overhanging facilities and temporary structures outdoors are securely fastened or placed on the ground, and complete precautionary measures as soon as possible.

    5. Small vessel owners should now complete all safety arrangements and return to nearby typhoon shelters.

    6. Small vessels not yet in typhoon shelters should seek shelter without delay. Use heavy anchors and check that all deck fittings are firmly fastened.

    7. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 150900 UTC, Super Typhoon Mangkhut (1822) with central pressure 940 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one nine point zero degrees north (19.0 N) one one nine point one degrees east (119.1 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 16 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 105 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 210 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 75 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 330 nautical miles.

    One one two point five degrees east (112.5 E)
    Maximum winds 105 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
