Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The outer subsiding air of Super Typhoon Mangkhut brought very hot weather to Guangdong yesterday. Locally, it was mainly fine, very hot and hazy during the day. Temperatures over most parts of the territory rose to about 35 degrees. Became cloudier in the evening. Mangkhut will edge closer to the coast of western Guangdong rapidly and pose a severe threat to the region.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong

Winds will strengthen significantly. Gale force northeasterly winds, becoming storm force southeasterly winds, hurricane offshore and on high ground. Cloudy to overcast. There will be frequent heavy rain, squalls, thunderstorms and storm surge. Seas will be high with swells. Temperatures will range between 25 and 32 degrees.

Outlook : Still heavy squally showers on Monday. Winds will weaken gradually later. Showers easing off in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., Super Typhoon Mangkhut with maximum sustained winds of about 195 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 19.5 degrees north, 117.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour towards the coast of western Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the northeast quarter.

    At 1 a.m., Super Typhoon Mangkhut was centred about 410 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.7 degrees north 117.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour towards the coast of western Guangdong.

    Mangkhut continues to move steadily towards the coast of western Guangdong, edging closer to Hong Kong with a high threat. According to the present forecast track, Mangkhut will be closest to the Pearl River Delta around noontime today and local winds will further strengthen. The Observatory will consider the need of issuing higher signals depending on the changes in local wind strength. Members of the public should stay on the alert.

    Mangkhut has extensive circulation with fierce winds. Its outer rainbands have begun to affect Hong Kong and local winds have gradually strengthened with gales on high ground. Weather will rapidly deteriorate today with frequent heavy rain and squalls. Sea will be high with swells.

    Under the influence of storm surge, a high water level of about 3.5 metres or more above chart datum is expected at the Victoria Harbour between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m on Sunday; whereas a high water level of about 4.0 metres or more above chart datum is expected at Tai O between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sunday. The high water level may cause severe flooding in low-lying areas.

    The Observatory makes a special appeal to the members of the public to stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Waglan Island and Sai Kung were 73, 58 and 49 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 92, 65 and 72 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Complete all precautions in your home. Lock all windows and doors, insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish as soon as possible.

    2. Owing to storm surge, low-lying areas may have serious flooding or backflow of seawater. You should avoid going to likely affected low-lying areas and stay away from dangerous places.

    3. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

    4. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    5. Owners of neon signs should switch off the electricity supply to the signs.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 151500 UTC, Super Typhoon Mangkhut (1822) with central pressure 940 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one nine point five degrees north (19.5 N) one one seven point five degrees east (117.5 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 16 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 105 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 225 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 75 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 330 nautical miles.

    One one zero point nine degrees east (110.9 E)
    Maximum winds 85 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
