Storm to hurricane force southeasterly winds at first. Winds will weaken gradually overnight. Becoming fresh to strong gradually tomorrow. Cloudy to overcast. There will be heavy squally showers, thunderstorms and swells. Seas will be phenomenal at first. Temperatures will range between 25 and 28 degrees.

Outlook : Showers easing off gradually and weather will improve in the following couple of days.

Warnings:
Hurricane force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Gale force winds in Nan'ao.

Weather Situation:
At 7 p.m., Severe Typhoon Mangkhut with maximum sustained winds of about 155 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 22.0 degrees north, 112.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour into the inland area of western Guangdong.

Tropical Cyclone Warnings

The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal has been issued at 7:40 p.m. to replace the No. 10 Hurricane Signal. This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected. Gales are expected to persist for some time. Please continue to stay indoors until winds moderate. Precautions should not yet be relaxed.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 160900 UTC, Severe Typhoon Mangkhut (1822) with central pressure 950 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of two two point zero degrees north (22.0 N) one one two point nine degrees east (112.9 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 16 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 95 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 225 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
Radius of over 63 knot winds 105 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 330 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 170900 UTC
Two three point five degrees north (23.5 N)
One zero six point three degrees east (106.3 E)
Maximum winds 35 knots.

Dissipated over land.




The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
