    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 5:30 a.m. on 17 September 2018

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Nan'ao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 5 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Mangkhut with maximum sustained winds of about 110 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 22.6 degrees north, 109.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour into the inland area of southern China and weaken gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 7 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Mangkhut was estimated to be about 560 kilometres west of Hong Kong (near 22.7 degrees north 108.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across the inland area of southern China and weaken gradually today and tomorrow.

    Mangkhut continues to depart from Hong Kong. Local winds are also weakening gradually. There are still strong winds generally over the territory, while occasional gales are affecting offshore and high ground. Members of the public should still take necessary precautions. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 will remain in force for a period of time.

    Mangkhut brought different degrees of damages to Hong Kong. There may be hidden danger. Members of the public should remain on the alert for assurance of personal safety.

    The outer rainbands of Mangkhut will still bring squally showers to Hong Kong. Sea will be rough with swells at first. Members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau and Sha Chau were 76 and 50 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 86 and 68 kilometres per hour respectively.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 162100 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Mangkhut (1822) with central pressure 975 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two two point six degrees north (22.6 N) one zero nine point three degrees east (109.3 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 210 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 330 nautical miles.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
