Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 9:30 a.m. on 31 October 2018

Warnings:
Storm force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

Weather Situation:
The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

At 9 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu with maximum sustained winds of about 110 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 17.5 degrees north, 118.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour across the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
North to northeast force 6 to 7, up to force 8 later.
Isolated heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
Rough to very rough seas.

Nan'ao and Shanwei:
North to northeast force 8 to 9, force 10 to 11 later.
Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
Very rough seas, becoming very high later.

South of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao:
North to northeast force 7 to 8, up to force 9 later.
Scattered heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 11 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu was estimated to be about 640 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 17.6 degrees north 117.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 310000 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Yutu (1826) with central pressure 975 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one seven point four degrees north (17.4 N) one one eight point zero degrees east (118.0 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 210 nautical miles over northeast quadrant, 180 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

Maximum winds 65 knots.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
