    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:30 p.m. on 31 October 2018

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 4 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu with maximum sustained winds of about 105 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 18.1 degrees north, 117.5 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    North to northeast force 6 to 7, up to force 8 later.
    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough seas, becoming very rough later.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    North to northeast force 8 to 9, force 10 to 11 later.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Very rough seas, becoming very high later.

    South of Hong Kong:
    North to northeast force 7 to 8, occasionally force 9.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 5 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Yutu was estimated to be about 570 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.2 degrees north 117.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour crossing the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

    In the past few hours, the structure of Yutu near its centre was relatively loose. Yutu is expected to re-organize gradually and turn to the north tonight and tomorrow. According to the present forecast track, the chance of local winds becoming generally strong tonight is relatively low. The chance of issuing Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 before midnight is not high. With the combined effect of northeast monsoon and Yutu, winds over the coast of Guangdong are expected to strengthen tomorrow and on Friday.

    2. People planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, outlying islands or remote parts of Hong Kong should note that changes in weather may affect your trips.

    3. There will be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    4. Construction and property management practitioners should make sure that overhanging facilities and temporary structures outdoors are securely fastened, and should take precautionary measures.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 310600 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Yutu (1826) with central pressure 980 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one eight point zero degrees north (18.0 N) one one seven point five degrees east (117.5 E) and is forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 6 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 55 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 210 nautical miles over northeast quadrant, 180 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    One one six point five degrees east (116.5 E)
    Maximum winds 60 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
