Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 21:20 HKT 30/Jul/2019

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 9 p.m., the tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea was estimated to be about 500 kilometres south of Hong Kong (near 17.8 degrees north 114.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 12 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of western Guangdong.

According to the present forecast track, the tropical depression will maintain a distance of over 300 kilometres from Hong Kong tonight and tomorrow morning. Unless the tropical depression intensifies significantly or adopts a more northerly track, local winds will not strengthen significantly early tomorrow. The Strong Wind, Signal No. 3 is expected to remain in force before dawn tomorrow. Members of the public are advised to take note of the latest weather bulletin before departing tomorrow morning.

Under the influence of the outer rainbands associated with the tropical depression, there will be heavy squally showers and thunderstorms over the coast of Guangdong in the next few days. Seas will be rough with swells.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. Please complete precautions as soon as possible. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

2. Drains should now be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. Seas are rough and there are swells. You are advised to stay away from the shoreline and low-lying areas, and not to engage in water sports.

4. Avoid staying in areas exposed to high winds. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

5. Small vessels not yet in typhoon shelters should seek shelter without delay. Use heavy anchors and check that all deck fittings are firmly fastened.

6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
