Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 04:45 HKT 25/Aug/2019

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 5 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Bailu was estimated to be about 390 kilometres east-northeast of Hong Kong (near 23.2 degrees north 117.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of southeastern China.

Bailu will make landfall over the coast of southeastern China shortly. The outer rainbands of Bailu will affect Guangdong, bringing squally showers to the region today.

After making landfall, Bailu will weaken gradually. The chance of generally strong winds in Hong Kong is low, but there will be occasional strong winds offshore.

Unless Bailu takes on a track closer to the Pearl River Estuary, the chance of Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is not high. The Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force for a period of time.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Precautions should be taken. Windows and doors should be checked.

2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. People planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, outlying islands or remote parts of Hong Kong should note that changes in weather may affect your trips.

4. There may be swells. You are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's website and mobile app for the latest information on the tropical cyclone.

  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
