Bulletin updated at 01:05 HKT 26/Aug/2019

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Tropical Cyclone Bailu made landfall over the coast of southeastern China yesterday morning, then crossed southeastern China and weakened progressively from a severe tropical storm into a tropical depression. Under the influence of Bailu, there were occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms over Guangdong yesterday. More than 50 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over most parts of the territory and more than 4000 cloud-to-ground lightning strokes were recorded in Hong Kong. Bailu is expected to dissipate gradually today. With an anticyclone aloft strengthening, the weather will improve gradually over southern China in the next couple of days. It will be very hot midweek this week.

At 11 p.m. last night, Bailu was centred about 180 kilometres north-northeast of Guangzhou. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour further inland and dissipate gradually.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong

Cloudy with showers and squally thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at times at first. Showers will ease off with sunny intervals during the day. Temperatures will range between 23 and 31 degrees. Moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground at first.

Outlook : Mainly fine and becoming very hot in the following couple of days.

(The above forecast period is valid up to 23:59 HKT today, 26/08/2019; Regular update at : around 45 minutes past each hour, 16:15 HKT and 23:15 HKT)

Bulletin issued at 21:30 HKT 25/Aug/2019

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 251200 UTC, Tropical Depression Bailu (1911) with central pressure 998 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two four point eight degrees north (24.8 N) one one four point four degrees east (114.4 E) and is forecast to weaken and move northwest at about 10 knots for the next 12 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles over southeast quadrant, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.

No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

Forecast position and intensity at 260000 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
