At 10 a.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 30 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 75 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 5. The intensity of UV radiation was moderate.

Tropical Cyclone Podul to the west of Luzon has entered within 800 km of Hong Kong. Podul is expected to maintain a distance of more than 600 km from Hong Kong this morning (28 August). It will not pose direct threat to Hong Kong for the time being. The Hong Kong Observatory will monitor closely Podul’s movement. Please take note of the latest weather report issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

An anticyclone aloft is bringing generally fine weather to southeastern China.

At 10 a.m., Tropical Storm Podul was centred about 500 kilometres east of Xisha. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly fine and very hot with haze. Light winds, becoming moderate easterlies.

Outlook : The weather will become unsettled and windier in the next couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    An easterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 10 a.m., Tropical Storm Podul with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 17.0 degrees north, 117.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    East to northeast force 4 to 5, up to force 6 later.
    Some haze.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao, Shanwei and South of Hong Kong:
    East to northeast force 5 to 6, up to force 7 later.

    Moderate to rough seas.

    Shangchuan Dao:
    North to northeast force 5 to 6, up to force 7 later.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 280000 UTC, Tropical Storm Podul (1912) with central pressure 994 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one six point nine degrees north (16.9 N) one one seven point four degrees east (117.4 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 15 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    One seven point seven degrees north (17.7 N)

    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
