Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 7:30 p.m. on 28 August 2019

Warnings:
Storm force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong.

Weather Situation:
An easterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Podul with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 16.8 degrees north, 114.9 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea towards the vicinity of the southern part of Hainan Island.

Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
East force 5 to 6.
A few squally showers. More showers and thunderstorms later.
Moderate to rough seas.

Nan'ao and Shanwei:
East to southeast force 5 to 6, occasionally force 7.
Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.
Moderate to rough seas.

South of Hong Kong:
East to northeast force 5 to 6, occasionally force 7.
Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.
Moderate to rough seas.

Shangchuan Dao:

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 10 p.m., Tropical Storm Podul was estimated to be about 590 kilometres south of Hong Kong (near 17.0 degrees north 114.2 degrees east) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea towards the vicinity of the southern part of Hainan Island.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 281200 UTC, Tropical Storm Podul (1912) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one six point nine degrees north (16.9 N) one one four point six degrees east (114.6 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 291200 UTC
One eight point two degrees north (18.2 N)
One zero nine point six degrees east (109.6 E)
Maximum winds 50 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 301200 UTC
One eight point zero degrees north (18.0 N)

Maximum winds 45 knots.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.
