Bulletin issued at 21:30 HKT 01/Oct/2019

Tropical Cyclone Warning

Typhoon Mitag (1918) has weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 980 hectopascals. At 011200 UTC, it was centred within 30 nautical miles of three zero point zero degrees north (30.0 N) one two two point three degrees east (122.3 E) and is forecast to move north-northeast at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 270 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 021200 UTC
Three four point one degrees north (34.1 N)
One two five point eight degrees east (125.8 E)
Maximum winds 50 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 031200 UTC
Three seven point six degrees north (37.6 N)
One three zero point six degrees east (130.6 E)
Maximum winds 35 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 041200 UTC
Become extratropical low.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong in the past, the hourly mean ambient gamma radiation dose rate may vary between 0.06 and 0.3 microsievert per hour. (1 microsievert = 0.000001 sievert = 0.001 millisievert)
  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
  4. The data displayed is provisional. Only limited data validation has been carried out.
