Bulletin issued at 06:30 HKT 31/Oct/2019

Tropical Cyclone Warning

Severe Tropical Storm Matmo (1922) has weakened into a Tropical Storm with central pressure 988 hectopascals. At 302100 UTC, it was centred within 90 nautical miles of one three point five degrees north (13.5 N) one zero eight point zero degrees east (108.0 E) and is forecast to move west at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles over northeast quadrant, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles over northeast quadrant, 150 nautical miles elsewhere.

Forecast position and intensity at 312100 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  2. Temporal variations are generally caused by changes in meteorological conditions such as rainfall, wind and barometric pressure.
  3. Spatial variations are generally caused by differences in the radioactive content of local rock and soil.
