    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong. Strong winds in Nan'ao and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 3 a.m., Tropical Storm Merbok with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 23.0 degrees north, 114.6 degrees east, it is forecast to move north or north-northeast at about 18 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Southwest Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the southwest quarter.

    At 3 a.m., Tropical Storm Merbok was centred about 90 kilometres north-northeast of Hong Kong Observatory (near 23.0 degrees north 114.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northeast at about 18 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

    With Merbok departing gradually, local winds are weakening. The Hong Kong Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No.3 in the next two hours.

    From midnight to 3 a.m., over 20 millimetres of rainfall have been recorded generally over the territory. Under the continued influence of the rainbands of Merbok in the morning, there will be heavy rain and squalls in Hong Kong. Members of the public should stay on the alert.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island and Ngong Ping were 66 and 64 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 86 and 89 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Although the tropical cyclone is moving away from Hong Kong, gales are expected to persist for some time. You are advised to stay indoors until winds moderate and it is safe to go out. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

    2. Since seas are very rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    3. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    4. Please listen to radio or watch TV for the latest weather information broadcast. You can also browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for the information.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 121800 UTC, Tropical Storm Merbok (1702) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point nine degrees north (22.9 N) one one four point six degrees east (114.6 E) and is forecast to move north or north-northeast at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
