    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Shanwei. Strong winds in Nan'ao, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Merbok with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 23.4 degrees north, 114.6 degrees east, it is forecast to move north or north-northeast at about 18 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 was issued at 4:40 a.m.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Merbok was estimated to be about 130 kilometres north-northeast of Hong Kong (near 23.4 degrees north 114.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northeast at about 18 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

    Strong winds are still affecting Hong Kong with occasionally gales on high ground. Strong Wind Signal, No.3 will remain in force for some time during the morning.

    When strong winds no longer affect Hong Kong, the Observatory will cancel all the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals.

    Under the influence of the rainbands of Merbok, there will be heavy rain and squalls in Hong Kong during the morning. Members of the public should refer to the corresponding warnings.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau and Ngong Ping were 49 and 70 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 68 and 87 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. You should not relax taking precautions as strong winds are still blowing and unsecured objects may be blown down. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

    2. Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    3. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 121800 UTC, Tropical Storm Merbok (1702) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point nine degrees north (22.9 N) one one four point six degrees east (114.6 E) and is forecast to move north or north-northeast at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
